For a project based learning project the 5th Grade class worked on a plant unit and created a plant foldable. A “foldable” is a tri-fold folder made with a large piece of construction paper that students decorate and keep their work in from a learning unit. Students participated in many activities integrating all the different subjects, creative arts, and research to complete our plant project. Students worked collectively and independently on their foldables and kept up with them throughout the month. This tied into our garden, which we did a lesson on every week. Our students planted, watered and weeded the garden on a weekly basis. This provided a great visual and hands on experience for the students as we completed our plant project.
In our plant foldable, students worked on completing different activities. They came up with their own questions about plants to research and answer. Students completed the research to answer the questions on their own to share with their peers. We also completed fun activities such as creating our own drawings of the different parts of a plant and the life cycle of a plant. Students also worked on the plant foldable during center and free time. This was their own project to decorate and create, and they took great pride in completing it and doing it well. Every activity was kept in their foldable to complete on their own time, which the students really enjoyed and it showed in their work! Sunshine, a 5th grade CIS student, said “I like the foldable because we got to draw on it and make it our own. Every week we had different choices of activities to do.”
